It's the most wonderful time of the year again! The time of year where we try to plot how to escape from various horrid family gatherings and sneak out to get drunk and/or play video games. But feel sympathy for we humble public servants who have to work all week. This picture, taken in Dalaran by Gerda of Lightbringer, is about as close as I'll get to a Christmas tree this year, unless one falls on a person.

Looking Ahead November's Guild 2009-aion gold
Transitions
These activities soon drew Blizzard's attention and in 2006 the Sleeper Cartel was invited to join the Guild Relations Program. Karin stepped down from leadership in June of 2007 and appointed Darias the guild leader. Since then we've transitioned from spies to Godfather-esque mobsters and the guild has flourished. Currently we have around 120 members within the guild from most every walk of life. We have chefs, engineers, students, veterans, retired grandparents, programmers, and many more. We have people that are hardcore raiders or PvPers and people who use WoW as a chat client. Some log in once a week and others play many hours per day. If you're in here, you're family.
Our two biggest services are our in game parties and our RL charities. In game we hold at least one party a year (which we make sure to tell everyone about, including WoW.com :D ). These parties are the end result of many guildies' farming and creativity, all to give our attendees a good time through games, events, dancing and comedy. In addition, our past two parties have been DJ'd by Chaotica of Split Infinity Radio, dedicating the entire online station to our use for a three hour block.
While we have countless in-game donations for our parties, the RL charities generate nearly as much. As a guild, we've donated to several organizations including Toys for Tots last winter, Military Working Dogs this past summer, the DSACO Buddy Walk for Down syndrome and Autism Speaks last year, and our current charity is the One Meal Organization. Through the generous donations of our guildies, we've helped make the world a better place, a little bit at a time.

Looking Ahead
Sleeper Cartel has no plans to stop anytime soon. We'll still continue our party traditions, making them bigger and better every year, as well as our charity drives. We may not be the biggest guild, or the most hardcore, but we're strong and resilient. The Sleeper Cartel has always been a family friendly guild, committed to providing a warm, welcoming environment to our members, regardless of (and sometimes due to) their RL situation. In Sleeper Cartel we never lose sight of the fact that every toon represents a real person, and the guild is as much about the person behind the screen as it is about the character being played. This view has generated the mantra, "RL > WoW." We understand the complications of Real Life. We support our friends. We are Family.

Light's Vengeance-aion gold
We've featured a video showing off this stretch of the Shadowmourne questline before, the bit where you retrieve Light's Vengeance, but I would hardly call The Sacred and the Corrupt old news. It's still a quest just about every class that can wield two-handed is thinking about. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to witness this amazingly epic quest themselves.

There were also some failures, like my inability to do the quest completely without my UI. Here's a tip: When you turn off most of your addons to improve the quality of your recording, don't forget that some of those addons controlled your stun/interrupt keybinds. You usually need those. I'm sorry, Clique. I didn't mean it. Come back to me, please?
It's not perfect, but hopefully it will give you all a better look at what goes on here. Enjoy!
I got pretty badly smeared the first time I tried this in PvE arms gear- while normally the "annihilate them all in a bladestorm and then scoop lewtz" approach works admirably in such situations, what doesn't initially show is the fact that these adds spawn like tribbles on viagra. I had much better success in tank gear / prot spec, largely by virtue of being able to simply backstrafe them all, shockwave, and then click the hammer while they're stunned.

We've been through a lot in 2009. It seems like every time we get settled on a spec or playstyle, Blizzard flipped it around with the next content patch. With each raid dungeon released, the top DPS build seemed to bounce to a different tree every time. I would say that rogues are probably in the top 3 classes for 'most change received' in 2009, especially when talking about changes that redefine the class completely. While death knights will complain that all they saw was the nerf bat this year, rogues have matured as a class and are far more versatile than where we were in January.
We exited last year with Mutilate reigning over Combat, daggers standing triumphant at their long-awaited return to a rogue's hands. Early Naxxramas raids had me convinced that I had better start enjoying the Assassination tree, because a double Webbed Death rogue was a force to be reckoned with. Our PvP viability looked something like it always had: the ultimate ganking machine, but not much else. Let's explore some of the changes that took us from our previous one-trick-pony status to the versatile killers that we are today.

Hunger for Blood-aion power leveling
Patch 3.1 – Hunger for Blood redesign
Hunger for Blood's clunky mechanic was so bad, I dedicated an entire article to describing how much it made me hate playing Mutilate. Blizzard has tweaked, prodded, and transformed Hunger for Blood so many times over the past year that I don't even remember the initial iteration. I believe in patch 3.1, they finally found the happy medium they were looking for. They doubled its duration to a minute, removed the stacking requirement, and dropped the energy cost through the floor. While they're still using it as a knob to tweak our damage today, it has really matured from an ill-conceived attempt to make Mutilate viable into a decent ability that adds just the right amount of flavor to Mutilate.
One of our biggest changes in '08 was the buffing of our utility poisons to a new 50% rate, essentially guaranteeing application of whichever poisons we were using. Unfortunately, our new poison scheme was so strong, that it became the focus of the entire class. You wanted to be Mutilate for the poison bonuses, and you wanted to use the quickest daggers possible (at the cost of physical damage) to maximize your poison output. There was no concern for anything besides poison! Webbed Death was best-in-slot, and a blue heroic drop was close behind.
By moving Instant Poison to the new PPM mechanic, Blizzard really broke the stranglehold that Mutilate had on competitive rogue DPS. It also allowed slower weapons, such as all of the Kel'Thuzad drops, to be viable for the rogues who had picked them up. Poisons have undergone so many changes in 2009, that they are now truly an integrated part of our DPS and our class as a whole; instead of a temporary weapon enchantment that we ignore 99% of the time.
THE ASS and the Fox, having yyqiang091225 entered into partnership aion power leveling together for their mutual wow power leveling protection, went out into the forest to hunt. They had not proceeded far aion power leveling when they met a Lion. Patch 3.1 was designed to get Combat back into a rogue's PvE arsenal, but unfortunately, it worked too well. The buffs to LR and SC were so strong, that current Mutilate builds depend on LR's haste as a core part of their build. Combat went from a mid-tier DPS tree into the chart-topping build that we saw taking over in Ulduar. With hard mode fights pushing cooldown usage to the limits, Combat truly saw its 15 minutes of fame as all of the previously Mutilate rogues continued to run Naxx25, praying for a Calamity's Grasp to drop.

Combat vs Mutilate with no clear winner
Without Deadly Poison, Mutilate would be in shambles while Combat ruled the castle. Without the Slice and Dice buff to 40% haste and Lightning Reflexes transformation into a talent worth taking, where would our scaling be now? Without Fan of Knives, we would be snubbed when asking to go on a raid where there's any fight with more than a couple targets. And without the overarching poison changes, we'd all still be dual-wielding Librarian's Paper Cutters just to get through a heroic. Instead, we have two completely different builds and playstyles, and we're worth bringing to a raid based on our DPS alone.
Conclusion:
Blizzard did a great job of reintegrating rogues into the game by giving us the tools necessary to have multiple viable DPS builds, a variety of rotations based on gearing choices, and the ability to compete at the very highest end of the DPS spectrum. We're where we've always wanted to be right now, with our two DPS specs on top of the world yet both rivaling each other, many of our class' unsuccessful talents redesigned or reimagined, and holding true raid utility in the form of FoK and Tricks of the Trade. Now all we need is for that fix to Vanish to hit in time for Cataclysm, and I'll be completely satisfied.

As an elemental shaman as well, I don't know whether to agree or disagree with trash counts/doesn't. The fact is, as I see it, unless there are many, many easy-to-kill mobs in one area (magma + nova + chain lightning + thunderstorm = win), elemental shamans don't do great dps on basic trash, since we have longer casting but more powerful spells than most, and we have to use a global cooldown adding a flameshock to the target (usually) before we begin dpsing. The trash just goes down too fast. Our big dps happens on bosses, which is why we're inclined to say that anything not a boss doesn't count, even though others might definitely consider it to count.

10 and 25 man formats One of the first, most startling changes to raiding that happened when Wrath hit the shelves was that all raiding would now take place in both 10-man and 25-man formats. The biggest difference between 10 and 25, of course, is the amount of behind-the-scenes work you have to do in order to herd the cats into a coherent raid group. If you follow the law that you need 15% overage to ensure your raid is always full, then you're already trying to organize 12 and 29 people. And then you need to convince them all not to stand in fire, to gem and enchant "properly," and all the other headaches that go into raid leading. Allowing players to choose their own preference of group size helped everyone decide whether they wanted a mega-raid flavor, or a "me and my friends" level of interaction. I would not presume to say that no 25-man raid is a "friends" format, but I'm guessing most casual players who tend to stick to their real-life friends end up in a 10-man format. Sure, the 10-man stuff is pretty good too, and compatible to the level of raiding you're doing, but 25-man raids get all the higher item level stuff. In other words, the 10-man gear is sweet, but the 25-man gear is super sweet. The argument in favor of that dynamic is that 25-man raids require more organization and bigger metrics in order to succeed. That's absolutely true, but it does leave 10-man raids feeling a little subpar of the 25-man stuff. And if you're talking about these rewards in terms of personal scope -- ie, how hard did I work to achieve this goal? -- then it's a hard pill to swallow that you're getting a smaller reward for playing with fewer friends.

Contrary to how many forum denizens interpreted the phrase, this design law was not intended to allow raids to bring 4 Warlocks and 5 Paladins yet still blow through Ulduar. Instead, this was a diversion away from the days of Sunwell, when raids would cram a very specific raid composition into the instance for the night. Each boss fight required exactly the right buffs and debuffs, in precise combinations, in order for the boss to be killed. In 2009, those days are firmly behind us. Every class is obviously still concerned about their place in raids, and what role-specific abilities they can supply. But there's relatively few abilities which aren't reproduced by some spec or another. You can generally bring most everyone in your guild to your raid. Three raid instances were immediately available at the release of Wrath of the Lich King. I don't want to spend a lot of time breaking down these three, since they were actually released in 2008. However, all three still see traffic even today, and each exemplifies some portion of the new raid design in 2009. So, without further ado, let's start talking about the Raids of 2009. Obsidian Sanctum The Obsidian Sanctum proved to be the home of Sartharion. While there's not a lot of lore you easily encounter, the basic idea behind the fight is that Sartharion was protecting the eggs of the Black Dragonflight. That's bad. So you go to the basement of Wyrmrest Temple, and beat him down. We have to kind of gloss over the fact that Alexstrasza and dozens of other big, beefy dragons are right there and presumably perfectly capable of dealing with this issue themselves. If it weren't for little suspensions of disbelief like that, we wouldn't have much to do in the game world. Sarth was a fairly simple raid on its normal difficulty. You go in, and you fight three little dragon bosses. This is the first of fights in Wrath which involved a "dance," though. Raiders were required to not-stand-in-stuff, click portals to enter a phased world, and otherwise react to environmental stimulus. The dances weren't difficult for most people, but they still had a learning curve for people who had never raided before. The final fight with Sarth himself was definitely a dance routine: dodge waves of lava, handle adds, and tank Sartharion. Again, not the most difficult fight out there, but certainly new content for many people. Sartharion, however, is the home of the first Hard Mode in Wrath of the Lich King. Not only did he have a Hard Mode, but he had the first variable Hard Mode. If you wanted a bigger challenge -- and better loot -- you could decide just how hard you were going to make the fight. With each of those little drakes you left up, you got a more difficult challenge. And with that greater challenge, came greater loot. A FOX one day fell aion power leveling into yyqiang091224 a deep well and wow power leveling could find no means of aion power leveling escape. Look before you leap. The level of difficulty you could handle became known as Sarth-1D, Sarth-2D, and Sarth-3D. Sarth-3D was, obviously, the most difficult version. With each drake you left up, Sartharion got tougher and tougher. You raid had to spontaneously handle the big boss himself plus all those mini-bosses (and their respective dances). Sarth-3D became a litmus test that proved or denied the abilities of different tank classes. Death Knights rose to prominence for a while, since their cooldown-based defensive abilities were perfectly suited to this scripted dance routine. By comparison, Paladins were called into question as effective tanks, since they had no real defensive cooldowns (at the time). When Sarth-3D was considered bleeding-edge content, the small cooldown differences were a big deal

Eye of Eternity -wow power leveling
Few raids can produce as much frustration as Eye of Eternity. With only a single boss, Eye of Eternity can still feel like three entirely different fights. You start off fighting Malygos, then his henchmen, then you hope onto vehicles to fight Malygos again. Eye of Eternity was the first raid to use Wrath's new vehicle technology. Players had a taste of dragon-riding and vehicle-piloting through the Occulus (which everyone hates), Wintergrasp, and about a dozen different quests. But when you hit the third phase of Malygos, your piloting skills were truly put to the test. The problems with Malygos's vehicle phase felt numerous. Raiders' efforts to improve their gear were relatively meaningless to the third phase, since the dragons you rode weren't originally affected by your item level. But LucasArts have perhaps looked at the wider picture. Star Wars is built on compelling stories and an engrossingly believable world, and BioWare has pedigree in abundance when it comes to these areas of expertise, with a team of 12 writers having reportedly worked on The Old Republic's plot for as long as two years before the official unveiling. So, all BioWare need to do is get good at making online titles, and work out the technicalities of delivering the experience to millions, and LucasArts are on to a sure-fire winner. Perhaps this is still a little bit of a gamble, after all... Another area where BioWare look keen to tread is the so-called mainstream mass market, titles like Mass effect and Dragon Age positively brimming with Hollywood-like production values and cinematic appeal, despite still being classic examples of the sometimes nerdy RPG genre. Accessibility is a by-word in The Old Republic, and LucasArts may feel that in BioWare they have a developer that can not only pull off a title to please the community and the critics, but also to lure the mass market currently enamoured of World of Warcraft.
